How to Get Rid of Condensation in Your Home

Condensation happens when warm, moist air meets a cold surface - usually your windows, but sometimes walls and ceilings too. Wiping it away every morning only deals with the symptom. The real fix is keeping your home consistently warm and properly ventilated, so that moist air has somewhere to go before it ever turns into water on your glass.

Why Is My Home So Damp?

Every home produces moisture - showers, cooking, drying washing indoors, even just breathing while you sleep. In an older Timaru villa or bungalow, that moisture often has nowhere to escape, so it lands on the coldest surface it can find. It's worse again once you're further inland - out towards Geraldine, Fairlie, Twizel or Lake Tekapo - where overnight temperatures drop further. The bigger the gap between a warm indoors and a cold outdoors, the more condensation you'll find on your windows by morning.

Is Condensation Actually a Problem?

A bit of condensation on a cold morning is normal and nothing to worry about. Left to build up over a whole winter, though, it's where mould gets started, and over time it can damage window joinery, curtains and paintwork. If we're out servicing a heat pump and notice condensation building up throughout a home, that's usually telling us the house needs more than heating - it needs air moving through it properly too.

What Actually Stops Condensation?

A few daily habits help: wiping windows down, running extractor fans when you shower or cook, and drying washing outside or somewhere ventilated rather than on a rack in the lounge. These are worth doing, but on their own they only manage the problem - they don't fix why it's happening in the first place.

Will a Heat Pump Fix My Condensation Problem?

A heat pump keeping your home at a steady, even temperature genuinely helps, because warm air holds onto its moisture instead of dropping it straight onto cold glass. But in an older home, or a particularly airtight new one, a heat pump by itself isn't always enough - that moist air still needs somewhere to go. That's where a fresh air ventilation system like Mitsubishi Electric's Lossnay comes in: it continuously swaps stale, moist indoor air for fresh filtered air from outside, while recovering most of the heat, so you're not paying to warm your home twice. It runs quietly in the background all year round, without you ever needing to crack a window and let the heat straight back out.

Quick Questions About Condensation

I've spent 25 years in South Canterbury homes, so I've seen pretty much every kind of cold, damp house there is - from old Temuka villas to newer, tighter builds out towards Twizel and the Mackenzie Country. That's exactly why I have Juran, our qualified builder, involved in every installation - he's looking at insulation and airflow, not just where the unit goes on the wall. If condensation's driving you mad, give me a call on 03 684 5298 or book a free service, no-pressure home assessment and I'll tell you honestly what will actually fix it.
