Frequently Asked Questions - Heat Pumps Timaru & South Canterbury

Got a question about heat pumps?

You're in the right place. We've answered the questions we hear most often from homeowners across South Canterbury. If you can't find what you're looking for, give us a call - we're always happy to help.

  • The right heat pump depends on several things - the size of the space you want to heat or cool, how well your home is insulated, the ceiling height, and what you want to achieve. There's no one-size-fits-all answer, which is why we always recommend a home visit before you buy anything.

Juran is a qualified builder, and that background sets us apart from most heat pump companies. When he comes out for a quote, it's not about trying to sell you a high-wall unit and moving on. He does an in-depth assessment - checking your home's construction, insulation, room orientation, and exactly what you want to achieve. Whether it's a single high-wall unit, a cassette, a full ducted system, or Lossnay ventilation for total home comfort, the recommendation is based on your home and your needs - nothing else.

  • Every job is different - the right system for your home depends on the size of the space, the type of unit, and the complexity of the installation. Rather than give you a rough number that may not apply to your situation, we'd prefer to come out, assess your home properly, and give you a detailed, transparent quote so you know exactly what you're paying for before you commit to anything.

  • We recommend a professional service once a year - ideally before winter, when you're about to start relying on your heat pump every day. For properties in rural areas, near busy roads or highways, or with high traffic through the building, we'd suggest a service every 3–6 months instead.

In between professional services, clean your filters regularly. For households with heavy use, pets, or on farms and rural properties, aim for every 4–6 weeks. It only takes a few minutes and makes a real difference to efficiency and air quality.

  • A soft clicking sound when the unit starts up or shuts down is completely normal - that's just the plastic casing expanding and contracting with temperature changes.

But these sounds are worth getting checked out:

    •       Rattling or vibrating - could be a loose panel, fan blade, or debris in the outdoor unit

    •       Gurgling or bubbling - could indicate a refrigerant issue

    •       Grinding or squealing - usually a fan motor or bearing problem

    •       Persistent clicking that doesn't stop - could be an electrical fault

Don't ignore unusual noises. In most cases, catching the problem early means a much cheaper fix. Give us a call and we can talk you through it.

  • Condensation and damp are really common in New Zealand homes - especially older homes that aren't as well sealed. A heat pump helps significantly because it both heats and dehumidifies the air at the same time.

For newer, more airtight homes, a Lossnay fresh air ventilation system is worth considering. It brings fresh air in from outside and passes it through a heat exchanger, so you get clean, fresh air without losing the warmth you've already paid to create. It's excellent for reducing condensation, removing cooking smells, and improving overall air quality.

  • Not quite anywhere - but usually we can find a good solution for most spaces. The main things we consider are:

    •       Where the outdoor unit will go - it needs adequate airflow and clearance

    •       Where the pipework will run between the indoor and outdoor unit

    •       Whether the wall can support the indoor unit

    •       The best position for airflow throughout the room

This is another reason why a home visit before purchasing makes a big difference. We've installed heat pumps in some tricky spots over the years - it's rarely impossible, but placement matters a lot for performance.

  • A ducted system is a whole-home heating and cooling solution where one central unit distributes conditioned air through a series of ducts and vents built into your ceiling or floor. Instead of having individual units in each room, you get even comfort throughout the entire home from a single system.

We install Mitsubishi ducted systems and they suit all home sizes and styles - new builds, renovations, and existing homes. In the quoting stage, Juran will visit your home to do an in-depth assessment covering sizing, compatibility, airflow, and exactly what you want to achieve. From there, we design a fully customised system tailored to your home - not a generic solution. Ducted systems are quieter, less visible, and give you zone control so you can heat or cool different parts of the house independently. For total home comfort, they're hard to beat.

  • Yes - we install the Black Diamond AquaCore heat pump hot water system, which can reduce your hot water heating costs by up to 80% compared to a standard electric cylinder. It works by extracting heat from the surrounding air to heat the water, rather than relying on an element.

It's a great option for New Zealand homes looking to cut power bills. Ask us about it when you get in touch.

  • Yes - we're expanding further into the Twizel and Mackenzie Country area this year and are actively taking on new customers in that region. We already cover Timaru, Waimate, Pleasant Point, Temuka, Geraldine, and Fairlie - and we're looking forward to being the go-to heat pump specialists for Twizel and Lake Tekapo too.

For properties in the high country, we recommend the Mitsubishi Hypercore range. These units are specifically designed for colder climates and deliver full rated heating output down to -15°C - so you're not left in the cold when you need heat the most.

Get in touch and we'll let you know what we can do for you.

  • Yes - we service and repair all makes and models, not just Mitsubishi Electric. Whether you've got a Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Hitachi, or anything else, we can help. Just give us a call.
